What to practise? Most   students   cover   our   Driving   Curriculum   in   the   first   three   lessons,   with   Lesson   4   as   a review   and   practice   of   all   skills   and   Lesson   5   as   a   review   and   pre-test   to   make   sure   the Learner   Driver   is   ready   for   the   Road   Test.      Some   students   require   extra   lessons.      Either way,   the   Learner   Driver   should   be   able   to   tell   you   about   their   most   recent   lesson.     Following   is   a   brief   description   of   what   is   covered   in   each   lesson   and   what   should   be practised.
Lesson 3 - Driving Curriculum Moderate traffic situations (highway driving with on/off ramps): - merging onto and exiting 100 series highways - driving techniques on the highway and on and off ramps Moderate traffic situations (city streets): - driving techniques to manage the position of the car in traffic and change lanes safely - managing major intersections with four-way stops and traffic lights - awareness of pedestrian traffic and traffic hazards Complex traffic situations: - driving techniques to manage city streets with heavier vehicular and pedestrian traffic Lesson 3 - Continuing Practice Moderate traffic situations (highway driving with on/off ramps): - merging into traffic at highway speed - speed control and regular mirror checks - lane changes with mirrors, signals and shoulder checks - following distances (2, 3, 4 seconds - more in bad weather) - maintaining a “space cushion” around the car (including staying out of other vehicles’ blind spots and handling tailgaters) - lane position and staying out of “truck ruts” - what to do in case of a tire blowout - how to avoid hydroplaning and what to do if it happens - what to do if the car drifts and a wheel drops off the edge of the pavement onto the gravel shoulder - exiting from the highway at speed and slowing in the deceleration lane Moderate traffic situations (city streets): and Complex traffic situations: - continuing practice
